Cells For Safety Program
Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti's "Cells For Safety" program provides
domestic violence victims free cell phones with automatic 9-1-1 service.
The sheriff's office provides the cell phones based on the specific needs of
local police departments in Norfolk County. Many police departments already
operate similar programs but can take advantage of "Cells For Safety" if they
need more cell phones.
Because cell phones don't need paid service to dial 9-1-1, the "Cells For
Safety" phones offer quick, easy help. The phones cannot receive incoming calls
or generate telephone charges.
Sheriff Bellotti's Victim Services Unit oversees the "Cells For Safety" program.
Each cell phone, battery and battery charger has its own identification number
and is the property of the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office. The cell phones are
labeled and logged in a master list for inventory purposes.
The phones are then delivered to local police departments where they are made
available to victims at no cost.
Domestic violence officers in each police department determine who gets the
phones. They also assess the department's ongoing need for cell phones as well
as an individual victim's continuing need for a phone.
