House of Correction
Visiting Hours and Other Policies
The Norfolk County Sheriff's Office and Correctional Center is the only jail in
the country, and perhaps the world, located on the median of an interstate
highway. The Correctional Center was uniquely designed to accommodate the site
between the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 128 in Dedham,
Massachusetts.
The 502-bed facility is situated, in effect, on an "island" away from
residential neighborhoods, and its state-of-the-art construction and technology
make it one of the most secure correctional buildings in the country.
The Correctional Center opened in February 1992 and cost approximately $33
million to build. The center currently employs approximately 350 people. It
includes a one-story administrative building for the sheriff's office and eight
two-tiered housing modules for inmates.
Adjacent to the Correctional Center is a brick, two-story minimum security
pre-release facility and a vehicle maintenance garage.
All the buildings on the median site total 144,000 square feet and occupy 8.2
acres. The entire site encompasses approximately 12 acres.
The center's exterior was designed to meet Federal Highway Administration
standards for aesthetics and motorist safety, resulting in a façade that
resembles neighboring corporate buildings along Route 128. Additionally,
strategic landscaping virtually conceals the jail's exterior from view, and
carefully planned lighting ensures minimal distraction to motorists.
