Community Service Program
One of the most popular services offered by the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office is the Community Service Program,
which provides nearly 30,000 work hours of free labor to cities and towns and charitable organizations each year.
Inmate work crews provide a variety of services to non-profit organizations,
such as churches, schools and municipal agencies. Work includes painting,
carpentry, landscaping and clean-ups.
Inmates who participate in the program must pass a screening process by program
directors. Only non-violent, pre-release inmates are considered for the
program. Inmates with violent pasts or charges of sexual misconduct are
prohibited from participating.
Presently, the Sheriff's Office has community service crews working in
Norfolk County towns. Community Service allows towns to get work done that
otherwise could not be completed.
In 2008, Sheriff Bellotti’s community service crews built the new executive offices at Braintree Town Hall and painted Weymouth Fire headquarters. Crews also removed graffiti
from buildings and public property in Brookline and spruced up cemeteries throughout the county in preparation for Memorial Day ceremonies.
