Community Service Program
One of the most popular services offered by the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office
is the Community Service Program, which has logged approximately 700,000 hours
and saved Norfolk County communities an estimated $12 million since its
inception in 1985. More than 5,000 jobs have been completed to date.
Inmate work crews provide a variety of services to non-profit organizations,
such as churches, schools and municipal agencies. Work includes painting,
carpentry, landscaping and clean-ups.
Inmates who participate in the program must pass a screening process by program
directors. Only non-violent, pre-release inmates are considered for the
program. Inmates with violent pasts or charges of sexual misconduct are
prohibited from participating.
Presently, the Sheriff's Office has several community service crews working in
Norfolk County towns. Community Service allows towns to get work done that
otherwise could not be completed.
In 1999, Sheriff Bellotti's community service crews built the Cohasset Teen
Center and restored the historic Adam Capen House in Stoughton. In 2000, crews
renovated the Holbrook Council on Aging building.
