Victim Services
In 1999, Sheriff Bellotti created the first-ever Victim Services Unit at the
Norfolk County Sheriff's Office. The unit’s mission is to provide information and support services to crime victims, their families and other concerned individuals.
The Sheriff’s Victim Services Unit keeps victims informed about restraining orders, sentence terminations and pre-release assignments. The unit is involved in important violence prevention programs such as the White Ribbon Campaign, Employers Against Domestic Violence, Finding Hope for Children at Quincy Medical Center and the Cells for Safety program.
The unit fills a gap in services for victims that currently exists within the
corrections system. By filling this gap, Sheriff Bellotti's office provides
victims with safety planning, crisis intervention and referrals to community
resources.
The Victim Services Unit teams up annually with Verizon Wireless to co-sponsor the HopeLine project, which domestic violence victims free cell phones that are pre-programmed with emergency numbers Verizon Wireless was so impressed by the unit’s work that it awarded an ongoing grant so the NCSO can continue its work on behalf of domestic violence victims.
The Sheriff's Office is also dedicated to training law enforcement officials,
business administrators and community members on domestic violence and related
issues.
