The Legal Department’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the review of sheriff’s office policies, review of contracts with outside agencies/vendors, providing assistance with the bidding process for services/purchases when necessary, assuring training requirements are met, conducting and/or assisting with investigations (both internal and in conjunction with outside counsel/agencies), processing subpoenas for records, providing information requested by former or current inmates and outside agencies, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, Memorandums of Understanding with unions and outside agencies, inmate related legal matters, assisting with worker’s compensation processes and settlement negotiations, representing the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office in lawsuits filed, assisting with collective bargaining negotiations, and providing general legal assistance to the Sheriff, the Sheriff’s executive office, department heads and staff as needed.
